Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, contains 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that features numerous conveniences accompanying the casino, which houses 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
